Inside the pressure campaign on Danielle Smith to make gun ownership (and more) an Alberta right

Premier Danielle Smith intends to strengthen the little-known Alberta Bill of Rights this fall to include protections for people who refuse to be vaccinated, but she's facing heavy pressure from United Conservative activists to go much farther in her overhaul, CBC News has learned.

A group from the premier's riding in Medicine Hat, which calls itself the Black Hat Gang, has met with senior government officials and proposed a massive new draft of Alberta's rights document.

The "gang" wants it to enshrine an array of new rights, including confidentiality of health information and "informed consent" to medical care, as well as rights to keep and bear firearms, to use "sufficient force" to defend one's property, and "freedom from excessive taxation..." Canada’s politics are growing more and more Americanized—and Trudeau’s Liberal Party is the worst offender

The gun situation in Canada differs significantly from the U.S. In 2017, the year before Trudeau began his push for stricter guns laws, Canada had 267 gun homicides (0.72 per 100,000 people) while the United States had 14,542 (4.5 per 100,000 people). In 2021, the year before the government introduced its handgun freeze, Canada had 299 gun homicides (0.78 per 100,000 people) compared to 20,958 in the United States (6.7 per 100,000 people).

Some will say that 299 gun murders are too many, and that, therefore, more gun control is needed. However, Canada’s gun laws are objectively strict, most gun violence in Canada involves illegal firearms, and we are far less prone to mass shootings.

A report by Statistics Canada titled “Firearms and violent crime in Canada, 2022” found only 13 percent of handgun and 12 percent of rifle and shotgun homicides in Canada were committed by legal gun owners. Meanwhile, data shows that 77 percent of U.S. mass shootings between 1966 and 2019 were committed with legally acquired guns.

Rather than addressing gun violence in a Canadian context, the Liberals have framed the debate in American terms... [Continue reading...]

Here's how the U.S. trial of a Canadian linked to the Pearson gold heist could play out

The first of two trials connected to the headline-grabbing multimillion-dollar gold heist at Toronto's Pearson International Airport last year is scheduled to begin in September in a Pennsylvania court, but two of the accused are still in Canada.

Archit Grover and Prasath Paramalingam, who have been charged in the 2023 theft of gold from an Air Canada cargo facility, are also accused of being part of a firearms smuggling ring with another gold heist suspect.

In September 2023, Pennsylvania State Police pulled over Durante King-McLean in Franklin County after they say he committed several traffic offences. Grand jury documents list 65 firearms that were allegedly found in his vehicle. Police say those firearms were... [Continue reading...]

A teenage boy is recovering in hospital after he and his mother were brutally attacked and robbed by violent reoffenders out on bail, in their Elmwood-East Kildonan neighborhood.

On the afternoon of Aug. 3, Sokolova's son met her at the bus stop on Nairn Avenue and Kent Road. As they were walking home, two men approached them on bikes, and asked if they were from Ukraine or Russia.

What we know about the 2 men accused of shooting Good Samaritan in fatal carjacking

One of the men accused of murdering Rocky View County worker Colin Hough last week was on bail while the other had just finished a prison sentence for crimes that closely align with the allegations faced in the fatal carjacking, CBC News has learned.

Court records reveal new details about the two suspects' involvement with police, the courts and prison.
